BFR (Before Furniture Repair), I managed restaurants. While the restaurant industry taught me many things, like how to run a business efficiently and grow that business in my community, I also had this feeling that I was not where I was meant to be. Each day, the walls were closing in around me more and more. With the help of my beautiful wife, I finally left the restaurant industry and found my way into the furniture care and repair market by a family member.
I remember the first conversation about joining him for one day to see what furniture was all about. He promised me two things: He couldn’t pay me and I’d see all sorts of furniture in all sorts of conditions. He kept his promise on both points…he certainly didn’t pay me. But more than that, I was smitten.
A New Look at Furniture
It hit me that I could not only do the work, but I’d actually enjoy it. Who knew? I ended up spending a whole month with him. We rode around from home to home doing all manner of repairs. In one day, we could be filling and coloring a gash on a damaged tabletop, removing a coffee stain from a sofa seat cushion, to rebuilding a frame on the back of a recliner.
All the while, I was growing in expertise by gaining access to different methods of repair for wood, leather, and certain upholstery types. I acquired industry-recognized certifications in the cleaning and maintenance of upholstery, carpets and rugs, and leather.
While doing this for over a decade, I’d come across consumers who had multiple questions about their furniture. “How do I pick out quality furniture? What’s the best kind of fabric for sofas if I have kids or pets? What do I do if…” These interactions, along with my industry relationships, led me to create this blog.
